ABOUT TENNIS4SOS

Tennis4SOS is an initiative supporting the development of vulnerable and traumatised children from SOS Children’s Villages in Botswana through the power of tennis. The program was founded by journalist and KLTK member Mats Wanger and KLTK coach Tryggve Ehnberg, with support over the years from the RS Foundation, the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in France, and others.

Launched in July 2014 in the capital city of Gaborone, Tennis4SOS includes regular tennis training, tennis camps, and national training trips for participating children.

Botswana’s former Ambassador to Sweden, H.E. Mr. Lameck Nthekela, serves as the Patron of Tennis4SOS. Both the Royal Lawn Tennis Club in Stockholm and the renowned Mouratoglou Tennis Academy have generously hosted SOS tennis children at training camps free of charge.

Various charity and fundraising events have been held in support of the initiative, including an auction at the Botswana residence in Lidingö, co-hosted by H.E. Mr. Lameck Nthekela and former world No. 4 tennis player Robin Söderling. The guest of honour at the event was Mr. Jan Eliasson, former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.

KEY EVENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF TENNIS4SOS SINCE 2014

Tennis4SOS is proud to share the following milestones and initiatives:

  • Secured an annual budget to hire a professional tennis coach (a former ATP player) to coach 10 children from SOS Children’s Villages in Botswana for 7 hours per week, including training camps. This funding has mainly come from private members of the Royal Lawn Tennis Club in Stockholm, with support from H.E. Mr. Lameck Nthekela, former Ambassador of Botswana to Sweden and Patron of Tennis4SOS.

  • Funded the construction of a tennis practice wall within the SOS Children’s Villages compound.

  • Provided funding for six flight tickets for Tennis4SOS children to attend training camps in Stockholm and France. Both the Royal Lawn Tennis Club and the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy hosted the children free of charge, and Swedish tennis families provided homestays. Contributions came from individual donors in both Botswana and Sweden.

  • Hosted a high-profile charity auction at the Botswana residence in Stockholm, co-hosted by H.E. Mr. Lameck Nthekela and former world No. 4 tennis player Robin Söderling. The keynote speaker was Mr. Jan Eliasson, former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.

  • Organized two charity walks in Stockholm, led by Ambassador Nthekela, his embassy staff, and other supporters, to raise funds for Tennis4SOS training camps.

  • Held a local charity event at Sanitas Garden Centre in Gaborone, organized by Mr. Anders Sandström and Honorary Consul to Sweden, Mr. Kent Nilsson.

  • Secured support from two former top 10 tennis players: Jonas Björkman (Wimbledon champion) and Robin Söderling (two-time French Open finalist), who sponsored Tennis4SOS in 2016 and 2017.

  • Received sponsorship from best-selling author Sir Alexander McCall Smith, who supported a tennis camp in 2017.

  • Partnered with the British High Commission in Gaborone to organize a charity tennis tournament in 2016.

  • Gained significant media attention in both Botswana and Sweden. Coverage has included Botswana Television (BTV) and various local newspapers. Notably, when former President Seretse Khama Ian Khama visited Stockholm, he was pleased to be briefed about Tennis4SOS by Ambassador Nthekela.

  • Celebrated the first Tennis4SOS player to receive a tennis scholarship to Lewis-Clark State College in the USA.
